Object Style's Guide To Homeware Hacks

RACHAEL ADAMSComment

Guest Blogger, Esther Jackson-Burton is exploring the multi-uses of Object Style homewares in today’s post. Sometimes when styling objects in your home, it’s interesting to push the practical and creative boundaries of products to discover new, innovative functions as well as the thrifty benefits of one product, multiple functions.

And what better time to start experimenting than Christmas? With so many amazing opportunities to get creative in your homes and also in crafting handmade gifts for friends and family, Esther has put together some interesting food for thought for our special guide to homeware hacks.

As well as offering a metallic compact space for magazines and journals, our copper magazine holder offers alternative kitchen storage for chopping boards and utensils, displaying jewellery like the image above or even mounted to a front door, sitting underneath a letterbox to catch mail and parcels.

We love this collection of tassel wall hangings as seen on Design Sponge. Create your own 70's inspired wall art by displaying woven textile necklaces by Object Designer, Wild Columbine as hanging decorations when you're not wearing them as fashion accessories.

Wall tapestry was a big interior feature in 70's homes, creating an interesting piece of wall art as well as adding warmth and texture to a room. Recreate a bohemian haven in your home by displaying a bold, patterned textile such as Ferm Living's semi circle 'Kelim' rug on a wall.

Get creative in your home office by experimenting with storage and organiser options. Try mounting the strap pieces from our leather strap shelves to display magazines and journals. Or for a larger display feature suspend Ferm Living's hanging clothes rail from a wall or ceiling to show calendar reminders and to do lists.

Perhaps the biggest potential hides in the most ordinary of objects? Our copper coat hanger, can be used as perfect place to hang your jewellery, magazines and if you're feeling really creative this Christmas, as an innovative alternative to display festive decorations and cards.

Sometimes 6ft Christmas trees can overpower a room, they only really work in large, open spaces with sky-high ceilings that aren't all that common in two-up-two-down terrace houses or apartments. If you're opting for a real tree this year, make it a mini one and try using an interesting planter such as Ferm Living's tall concrete plant pot to display? A super stylish space saver in one!

And finally what is Christmas without the gift of giving? If you're looking to create handmade presents this year, we have an easy peasy suggestion that involves using our kraft paper festive gift bags as stylish 'plant holders' to display mini Christmas trees. Simply place the base of the plant (still in it's original container) inside the paper bag and secure with string or bakers twine. Finish with a Christmas decoration and a handwritten gift tag and ta-dar, a simple, stylish and thoughtful gift ready to give to a good friend!

Saving 'The Art of Surprise' this Christmas

RACHAEL ADAMSComment
Pile of pink presents

Every year I make a conscious effort to buy at least one Christmas present that is handmade. This comes from my decision to draw a big black line under the uninspiring experience of one-stop shopping where I found myself militantly making my way through a gift list, meticulously striking through completed present purchasing in one rapid-time hour. This isn’t what Christmas is about, is it?

See, this speed shopping behaviour isn’t entirely my fault, it’s a panic reaction to the modern day culture of gift giving and the art of surprise being something of yesteryear. So, picture this, Tuesday lunch hour web or window browsing, spies must-have in high-street safe bet, logs firmly in brain, screen shots and emails link, price and lengthy description to loved one, subject title Christmas ‘Wish’ List. Though the ‘Wish’ couldn’t be further than the truth, imagine your disappointment if that must-have wasn’t actually inside the beautifully, wrapped gift bag! Sound familiar?

Christmas is about being thoughtful, to carefully take the time to think about what the person you are buying for would really like, not want or need. The art of surprise needs embracing, why have we become so fearful of receiving something we don’t want or need? Surely those want and need buys are things we can save for and purchase ourselves.

I truly believe the best way to restore thoughtful gift giving is to buy handmade. To spoil your special someone with something they have probably never ever seen before, something they can’t buy from the high-street or from an online retail giant and finally something, an independent maker has spent time to craft, from the coming up with the concept to the development stage and finally to producing a beautiful and unique finished product.

I’m a big believer in small batch production and think there’s no nicer surprise than to receive a gift that is one-off and completely person, it’s shows a lot of love, thought, care and attention has gone into the buying process.

Object Style, can’t be everything but what it can be is a purveyor of creative, contemporary one-off design that has been curated into an easy and enjoyable shopping experience, that’s very likely to make someone you care about very happy this Christmas. So enjoy exploring our ‘Objects of Style’ gift list put together using products that have been crafted from our dream team of talented lady makers from all over the world.

A Very Nordic Christmas

RACHAEL ADAMSComment

Object celebrates it's 6 month birthday this month. 14th November to be exact. To mark the milestone, because the little ones really do matter as a small business, I wanted to draw on Object's biggest influence, Scandinavian style and culture and create a Nordic themed Christmas shoot.

I starting thinking about the direction of the festive season back in July this year, quite a tricky thing to envision in Mediterranean heat! With a season-less, buying approach at the forefront of Object's mission, I decided to also adopt this view when choosing products for our Christmas collection by selecting beautiful objects that can work in your home for the other 10 months of the year. More on this thrifty styling later!

So last Sunday, taking to the camera for the very first time, I worked alongside Manchester based stylist, Saubia Maloney to create 'A Very Nordic Christmas' set in my home.

Working with a contemporary colour palette of cloudy greys, rose pinks and festive flickers of copper set against the imperfect dark wooden floors and charcoal painted walls of my dining room, the aim was to style the shoot in the realest sense so it can be replicated in any home.

Much like Object's online product selection, the shoot combined the use of handmade wares crafted by Object Makers such as Covet Interiors, FOAK and Ink Inc, home accessories by leading Danish homeware brands Bloomingville and Ferm Living as well as twigs, berries and pine cones we foraged from a lovely Autumnal walk in the woods. Some foliage we left in it's natural state, such as our naked Christmas tree, others pieces we made pretty using copper spray paint and white frosting.

All of the products used in the images below are available to buy on our online store or will be in the next few weeks, along with some special surprises! Click on the links below each image to shop.

Finally, do visit our blog again next week where we will be posting a 'A Very Nordic Gift Guide' for all you Scandi-style fans out there!

I wanted to share personal post of my recent wedding because I've never felt happier in my whole life. There's not a word in the world that describes how you feel on your wedding day, at points it kind of feels like you might simultaneously combust! It's a whirlwind, no wait, a hurricane, these raw emotions come out of nowhere and take you by complete surprise, even if you think you're feeling relivately calm. If there's one piece of advice I'd give to a bride, it's make sure you and your partner take 20 mins to step back, look around the room and take it in. Even sneak off and take a little stroll together and just think that this is it, this is your wedding day.

So below I've curated a photo doc of everything our incredible photographer Lucy Little captured. She didn't miss a single thing. Every happy tear, every toothy smile, every stray hair, every laugh, every tiny detail we may of missed but we now know the full story. Like her name, she is pint-size, like a dainty pixie fairy who has this wonderful skill of camflougaging herself into the background and capturing the emotion. Lucy, from the bottom of our hearts these pictures are beyond anything we could have ever wished for, thank you.

Secondly, I have huge, personal thank you for the person that directed our vision and brought all our impossible ideas to life, Michelle from Pocketful of Dreams Design House. We worked with Michelle for almost a year and a half, carefully planning each stage of our wedding and despite thinking we're pretty organised, creative people, we absolutely couldn't have had the wedding we did, had it not been for Michelle's expertise. I like to think of Michelle as the'Wedding Oracle', her extensive knowledge is so useful and incredibly calming. Right from the minute go, she totally understood what we wanted to create and found the perfect solution to make it happen.

Finally, I have credited each supplier we worked with below the our wedding pictures. 99% of them were small, independent businesses, mostly hand-sourced by Pocketful of Dreams. Every person I have mentioned below, delivered the most amazing, personable service, really caring about every minor detail and shaped our wedding into the everything we could have wanted and more. Should you wish to use any of the images below, please contact Lucy via her website www.lucylittle.co.uk  Once her permission has been given please credit Lucy and the relevant supplier detailed in the list.

Enjoy! x

Like many people, I have a love/hate relationship with exercise. Surprising myself at pushing through painful limits, until I can think of nothing other than getting through that last set of squats or last breath of an elasticated yoga pose has become a feeling I crave. For me, it's not just about achieving physical results, it's about entering a mind state where nothing else matters. Zoning out is hard, sometimes we need to be forced into it.
